Its the leavings from water evaporation - all those trace elements/minerals, etc.

Vinegar should take it right off. Just don't clean it over the tank.

First try water and a toothbrush. Normaly I can just get it off with that.

Sounds like you have hard water with a lot of minerals.

High GH? As in the test result?

High GH? As in the test result?

I better get a kit to test that, because my kit has ph,amonia, nitrates, nitrites.

It should me OK. KH and GH are two more extra tests. In short: KH tells you how stable the pH is, and GH tells you how many meganisms and calcium ions there are.

Just clean off the white stuff, and wait untill next time.

Most hardness test kits have both kh ang gh together.. Personally I like keeping an eye on the KH and maintaining it as if that is right your PH should be nice and stable...

I asked if the GH was high simply as it can cause the problem described, not a huge issue though, just clean it as others said (GH is very low in tap water here, but I guess that can be very different elsewhere)..

I scrub my glass tops once a month as part of my normal tank maintenance, to keep ahead of the white junk! If it's already built up, I take the item that it's built up on, remove it from the tank and let it dry out completely... maybe out on the patio or something in a sunny spot (Seems to me that drying it out first helps to loosen the crud) Then I soak it in a big bucket of hot water and white vinegar, preferably overnight. The next morning, the crud just wipes off or, at the most, with a little scrubbing with a tank scrubbie pad. Then rinse it really well to get the vinegar off. That's what I do, anyway!
