We own about 5 acres of land. The property slants toward the middle so that when it rains (like it is now), the ground there stays wet for a long time. During a few conversations, it's been brought up that we should dig out the area and make a pond (all water flows that way anyway). The soil has a lot of clay, and our former neighbors had a spring-fed pond dug out by the DEC, so I'm thinking that ours might be the perfect spot for a pond, too (if we hit a spring).

My mother in law has a koi pond, and that is not what I want -- much too much maintenance. I guess what I'm asking is if anyone has experience or insight into this.

Should we dig and see what happens? Call the DEC? Any thoughts?

While initally this seems like a good idea it is not really the case if you plan to use a pond liner. The water that normaly gathers there could start pushing back on you pond liner from underneath.

Actually, I was thinking of not using a liner. I was told that the clay soil would work well in retaining the water.

I was told by a DRN guy the best way to make a non lined pond.Is to burn as much stuff as you can in the pit.
The heat mixed with the ash and clay turn hard, kinda like fireing a ceramic flower pot.
I argree do not line a pond that might fill on its own from ground water.
