hey i have a 40 gal discus tank at water temp dropped to the low 70s should i add water to make it 86 or should i gradually increase it . running to the store to get new heaters.

KaaBamm! You called? I'm guessing that the heaters broke or something so the temp is dropping. Any rapid change in temp can kill a fish. So you want to very slowly raise the temp. I would say 1*F/hour. Also be sure to avoid hot and cold spots if you are using hot water. Do a quick 10% water change with warm water, and run as fast as you can to get the heaters. Then set them up, and let them do their thing.
