Does anyone know of a good broad range medication or cure for bacterial and fungal infections? I can't positively identify the problem so I was hoping to cover all bases.
My platy has developed white stuff along the edges of his pectoral fins practicaly overnight. It appears that the fin edges are degraded but it's hard to tell. There is only one other platy in the tank (16gal) and she's in perfect condition...Any advice is welcomed! :help:

Why not ty heat and salt. Try raising the water temp to 86F (slowly a few degrees every few hours) and adding 1 tsp of salt (NaCl) per gallon of tank water. Mix the salt in dechlorinated water first and then add to tank (slowly again).

Same as the ich treatment. If it is an external problem (and it sounds like it is) then that should help.

I suppose salt and heat couldn't hurt. I am not familiar enough with medications to recommend one. Personally, I'd be disinclined to wipe out all sorts of microorganisms wholesale. I'd expect it to cause as many troubles as it eases.
Of course the first step would be to check your water parameters and see if that reveals to you what has allowed the fish to be vulnerable to this whateveritis.
I have had good results with Melafix for finrot and for wounds. Like salty/heat, it couldnt hurt.

Thanks for the advice! I did add some salt and I also used Melafix. He's almost completely healed up and back to normal. My water parameters were all good (I test both my tanks regularly) but he was new so may have been injured when I got him.

I would recommend doing the treatment for a full week to make sure to completely heal things up. I know melafix syas to do it for 5-7 days so keep the salt and heat going as well. Just keep an eye on things and make sure no one is suffering for excessive heat.

Great!
and I second TKOS
