i have a filstar xp3 and i like it but the spray bar only covers half the tank, so the other half has no surface agitation. will it still work properly if I make the spray bar the full length of the tank, or by doing that will it cause an output drop of water presure?

I believe that Rena sells an excention. Try looking at www.bigalsonline.com and under parts. Its a long list, but I'm sure that Iv seen it before.
As long as there is rippling on the surface you are gettign plenty of agitation. I wouldn't worry too much about it. The gas exchange at teh water surface doesn't need to be much and really wouldn't necessarily have to cover the whole tank surface (though it does). A decent current in the tank with a lack of dead spaces is what is most important.
