View Full Version : Are shrimp asexual?
like earthworms, or do they come in male and female? Just got a pair of Amano shrimp and was wondering if they might mate.

Earthworms aren't asexual. They trade eggs and sperm in that cigar band around their middle, called the clitellum.
All the decapod crustaceans are male and female.

Are shrimp asexual?
Only after EVERYONE else in the bar has gone home.
Nope, they have the standard two genders.

I think amano shrimp do have two sexes. Marine shrimp like cleaners often are hermaphroditic.
Amano shrimp females get much larger than males, at least in my tank... also the females are carrying eggs almost continuously. If you were looking for a way to tell them apart.
Right then, back to bio 101 for me.:o Thanx Keely, that was going to be my next question. Wetman, I think that hermaphroditic was the word I was looking for.

Majority of shrimps are not hermaphroditic.
They have males and females specimens. Some of the shrimps, for instance, dwarf freshwater shrimps (http://www.shrimp-tank.com/dwarf-shrimps) have visible differences between genders.

That's right.
I was looking for shrimp questions/answers and some of them are quite out of date :)
