So, as I said on a previous post, my male gourami seems to have the same affliction as our female (just much less, only one small spot of body fungus)... our female died yesterday. I ran out and bought all the makings of a hospital tank right after she died and it's been running for 24 hours. I used some gravel from the established tank and dipped the filter media (sponge, etc) of the aquaclear filter into the established filter (emperor bio-wheel power 400) as suggested.
All set to add the gourami, but I'm very nervous about making him more stressed out by going through a cycle. Already, the tank is registering ammonia (.25... possibly there was waste in the gravel that was transferred?) and there aren't even fish in it yet!
Should I transfer him anyway, wait and see if the ammonia goes away, or treat my whole established tank with the meds?
ARG, this is the first affliction I've had yet, and I'm fairly clueless... thanks again for all your help!

you don't have to worry about it cycling, just make sure you do adequate daily water changes to keep the amount of chems down, put your fish in there, and start treating. add another bunch of gravel at the same time you put the fish in. don't just dip the sponge, leave it in there.

The last thing you want to do it treat the whole tank. IMO that will cause more stress than anything. Its better to loose one fish than two. I would take the media from the old tank and put it in the Qtank from now on. Let that stabilize for a day, and make sure everything is working fine. Then add the sick fish and keep an eye on the levels. If they get crazy high, do a water change. But otherwize just use the meds like normal.

Unfortunately, I can't switch filter media, b/c the filters are completely different sizes and types (not really thinking on that one)... But we did soak the new filter media in the old filter water, so hopefully that'll work out. I guess I'll see what the levels are like tonight and switch him if they are ok...
Thanks!

Cut the media then! Just slit it in half and make it fit!
