I have a large female cory, several years old- (from the book I have it looks most like a corydoras ehrhardti) who became sick a few weeks ago. She bloated up and had filled up bubbles attached to her back. I researched and figured it was "dropsy". Most of the information I found gave little hope to her recovering, and I could not find any info on successful treatments. In fact several sources said sick corys rarely recover. Not to be persuaded, I researched medicene instead and from a catalog, I found a medicene that claimed to treat dropsy, and that was Maracyn-Two.
I bought some from the local LFS and began the five day treatment. Since my hospital tank is only about 2.5 gallons it was a little tricky breaking up the tablet into appropriate pieces(as the directions are, each day, 1 tablet for 10 gal) so I believe my fish received a bit more medicene than directed. (I also changed about a gallon a day, as the sparse directions on the package made no mention of whether to change water or not.)
I did not see any change for the first three days, except she started eating the third day, but the fourth day she looked a little better, and fifth day- much better. I debated whether or not to put her back with the other fish in the regular tank right away, but decided to do it. The hospital tank is a translucent white, and when I put her in the big tank I noticed how she was a horrible pale almost yellow color. I hadn't noticed such a difference in the hospital tank. However, about an hour later, she had changed back to her normal colorations, and was looking better than ever. (I didn't know corys could change colors) Her dark patches were more visible than they had been for quite a while, she was not bloated at all, and the horrible bubbles along her back were all gone. This all happened several weeks ago, and she is still doing great. I'm writing this so that when someone else has a sick cory, they can find a success story on treating it. I hope somone finds this useful, as I certainly would have several weeks ago. If anyone else has any stories on how they successfully treated a sick fish, I'd like to read it.
