I have just built an overflow box for my marine tank using PVC pipe. I used regular PVC primer and cement to bond the pieces together.

Since this stuff is extremely toxic when in liquid form I was wondering if it is safe to use to feed my sump?

I used the purple primer and the grey cement this is what I was told by my LFS and they build them all the time and my fishes are still alive

Both are safe, though using primer is your choice and definatly not required.

Both will dry within 5 minutes, and the glue should be given 24 hours to cure properly.

As long as it is dry before you use it. I own an aquarium store, and have built extensive centralized filter systems with PVC solvent. Occasionally, doing repairs, I've used joins within half an hour. Never had any problems. If in doubt, though, you could always run some activated carbon in the system for a few days; its marvellous at pulling out any organic toxins like solvents.
