Depends on your filter. Sometimes it nice to have two. I used an eheim canister filter and a aquaclear hang on back filter. A good suggestion made by others in here is to get an eheim canister filter, add a prefilter and use it for biofiltration. Then get a Magnum HOT canister filter for mechanical filtration. I'd definitely go with a canister either way. XP filters are good too.
