Wow this is really weird. About 5 days ago I took the 2 platty's out of my 5 gallon tank and put them in my 55 gallon. So my 5 gallon has been sitting here empty for 5 days now. Anyway, I just noticed there was a baby platty swimming around in it. This guy is super small.

Anyway, I don't really have any experience with baby fish because the platty usually ends up eating them. What is my best bet to keep this thing alive? Should I just keep him in the 5 gallon tank until he grows and throw a flake of food in there every day or so?

Well, congrads on the baby!

Platy fry are super easy. Just grind up some fish flakes into a power and toss that into the tank 3 times a day. Try doing as many water changes as you can because he will miss most of the food, and it will make a mess. Keep doing that, and in a few months he will be big enough to be put into the 55g. Once he is bigger than the other fishes mouths he will be fine for the next tank. Good luck!

You might also consider putting some kind of sponge or something over your filter intake so the little guy doesn't get sucked up! I'm pretty sure I've lost a couple that way.

I think you posted this a day too late! I cant find him!

:( :( :(

Oh! I hope he didn't get sucked up! I just found a baby mikey mouse platy in my tank this morning. He looks like he's been there at least a week. I went to get my breeder/baby keeper, but I couldn't find him when I got back! I haven't seen him since, but I'm hoping he's just hiding and that my molly hasn't sucked him up!

I have java moss in large piles that my variatus fry hide in succesfully without any help from me. If I had every fry survive I'd be eaten out of house and home, but instead I have a few and the rest give my angelfish something to look for.

I'm going to get some java moss as soon as I get a new light bulb. :)
