Okay, I have had fish for a long time. I have had cichlids before as well as many other fish. Well now i havent had a tank for about a year or so and i have the craving for a new one. I wanted a saltwater one but i really dont think i have the time/money, so, back to freshwater i went. Ok well im going to be getting a 10-20 gallon tank (i would go bigger but i dont have room) and was wondering, What kind of cichlids would u recommend and why. Remember, good looking fish are always a plus, and i dont mind aggressive fish at all. any kind, just suggest some and provide a picture if possible( though i could always look it up). it could even be your favorite fish, it doesnt matter, i just need ideas, thanks

Try looking into some apistogramma, kribensis, or rams. You could also do a biotope tank of lake tangynika shelldwellers. :D

if it's at all possible, go with the 20 gal... because even if you have 2 cichlids that get along they are going to want space away from each other and theres really not much room in a 10 gal. but yeah, look at some.. apistos, rams, and kribs..

If you can go for a 20g long, then you could add keyhole cichlids to the list as well. Not real colorful, but different looking. Apistos always get my vote however, with multis (Lake tang shell dwellers) coming in a close second.

There are severl dwarf cichlids from Lake Tanganyika that would work nicely, check out these articlea.

My personal favorite are J. transcritptus. If you get 4 juvies and let them pair up (remove excess after a sole pair has formed) you could have a pair of transcriptus and also a pair/trio of brevis or a trio of other smaller shellies, in a 20g long.
