View Full Version : It's not Ick!!
A while back I posted a question as to whether my Black Angel had Ick. It had a few white spots on it, most of which have since dissappeared. Now it has an off-white or sort of beige blotch on it's upper lip and has developed similar colored blotches just behind it's pectoral fins. There are two other Blacks in the same tank that show no signs of this. They are all juveniles that I got 3 months ago when they were very small. All act the same.....very active and always hungry. These blotches worry me though. Any ideas as to what they could be?

It's not possible for us to tell you anything from a distance like this, beyond suggesting that your angel may have skin parasites, such as sessile ciliates or oodinium, or skin flukes, which are microscopic flatworms. It sounds like a colony.
Do you have any way of isolating the fish, to prevent the condition spreading?
No, sad to say I don't have a quarrantine tank yet. Is there a site with good descriptions or pictures that I can refer to?
Also, is there a medication that can take care of this type of condition? I've never had any fish come down with this type of thing.

Thanks folks for the feedback.
Dangerdoll, the closest thing I could find to what my Angel exhibits is the one called Cauliflower disease. None of the others seem to be remotely like it. And sadly it also says there is no proven cure for this disease. Very sad......

wow Len, I'm so sorry to hear that....if it's possible, I would separate him from the rest..... just in case. I mean, I'm not too familiar with that disease, and I don't know if it's contagious..... I will look into it though.

Flukes ?
If they seem to act normal - makes me wonder if it is Flukes...
Based on what I've read, it's not Flukes. That disease is almost impossible to detect until the fish starts gasping at the surface and acts listlessly. This fish has obvious of white blotches on his upper lip and behind his pectoral fins. His two tank-mates(that are black angels, are exhibiting none of these symptoms. All fish are very active and always hungry. I can't believe I've come up with a disease that nobody seems to have heard of.

here's a helpful site (at least I found it useful) in better understanding this particular disease and the steps necessary for those involved. The technical term is Lymphocystis Check this out:

My guess would be a bacterial infection or problems with his slime coat. Angels do seem to be prone to bacterial infections. If possible, adding a bit of salt to the water may help clear things up. Like others have mentioned, quarantining him would be nice, but I understand that that's not always possible. If it were my fish, I'd be less likely to suspect parasites as he acting normally and eating fine.
