check out nano-reef.com, there are a lot of people that know a ton about small tanks, some as small as 1 gallon or less. I am starting my own saltwater tank, so I wont claim to be anywhere near an expert.

I'd love to try a 20/25 gallon nano saltwater...but sadly...I'm out of space and money !!

I'd have to get rid of one of my freshwater tanks....and I'm so attached...lol...

You can start posting your questions here (only once ;) ) and we can start helping you.

If you already got the nano cube, now you need a good marine salt that contains all the good elements you tank needs, Live rock (1 pound per gallon), and sand (preferably live sand). A good test kit (ph, Amonia, NO3, NO2, etc) That is just to start cycling. If you have questions just posts them

Ok now you need to start your cycle. For the cycle you need to have the lights on for about 10 hours a day and off at night. The cycle will take a couple of weeks (no matter if you have live rock and live sand, which usually says in the bag instant cycle) after testing the water and having amonia at 0 and nitrites at 0, you could say that your tank is cycled, then you can start adding your cleaning crew ( hermits, snails, and/or shrimps). You have to wait a few days for the cycle to kick off, sometimes if you test the water the day that you set up your tank or the next day, the values might be at 0. This doesn't mean the tank is cycled, because it might take a couple of days for the process to start and then your amonia is gonna go up as well as the nitrites. Hope this is helpful and keep posting your answers there is always somebody with the right answers.

I forgot to ask, what is the size of your tank?

ps. btw you could read blinky's nano-reef diary and you'll get and idea of the process.

Sart by reading the beginner articles in nanoreef.com.
Later, go to your saltwater aquarium lfs, and don't buy anything, just go and look. Go back again and just look. Go back again, and just look. Eventually someone will recognize you, and take you aside to chat a bit. Now, buy something. Go back again, ask questions. Don't buy anything. Go back again, ask more questions. Buy something. Eventually they'll say hi Mr. Miller, how's the tank going? Want to see what came in yesterday? And ther ya go... Plus ask questions on here in the Marine forums as you go.
That's all folks :)

i don't have a nano tank, but was recently thinking about getting one, so i researched it. i'd check out http://www.nano-reef.com

fish id recommend for a nano reef:

a couple small clowns (ocellaris or percula)
a couple damsels
firefish
small gobies
blennies

i also suggest getting live rock (but watch out for hitchhikers- bristleworms or mantis shrimp)

Hey bmiller - all,
I just bought the 12 gl JBJ DX tank as well and starting off with my nano.

For the cycle you need to have the lights on for about 10 hours a day and off at night. The cycle will take a couple of weeks

Just curious about this post from ganjero because i read somewher to cycle the tank you should cover it with a blank for a week and that would speed up the process of cycling the tank the first time. So, i am just curious which way is best for a 12 gl tank.

Let us know - Thanks and great forums. Love reading them and seeing all the pictures of other peeps tanks!

If you do that you kill everything in the live rock (all the good bacteria, coralline algae, hithickers, etc), so there is not point buying live rock. In fact, this will make your cycle longer, there will be more death, more death=more ammonia= longer cycle. There is only a lil bit of death when you buy live rock and leave the lights on, so your cycle is shorter (but still a few weeks), there is nothing that can really spped up cycles. Just have patience.
