Hello all,
I am deciding to get back into the hobby a little bit by setting up a 10 gallon hexagon tank in my apartment at school this year. I saw and now want a nice little clown loach at my LFS. However, I know that the tank is too small for a clown loach, at least in the long run (8 months or so), before I'd want to set-up a larger tank at home after the school year is done.

So, with that said, any suggestions? The only fish I don't really want in there for sure is a Betta splendens...

Cheers,
~Matt

we really need to know what directions you want to go. here is my tank plan for my 10g - dwarf gourami, guppies, ottos, shrimp and lots of plants. this is only one of possibly thousands of possible combination . do you have lots of experience with fishkeeping or would you prefer hardy fish that could withstand mistakes?a heavily planted tank with tetras is always nice but you have to specify a bit. give us something to work with.

some specifics

Hi again,
I would like to have some live plants, but hardy ones like Java moss and Java fern (assuming I can track some down). I am an experienced fish keeper, so I don't need to skirt around "difficult" species. I guess I am just looking for some help in brainstorming here. I also do not want to deal with any live food this time around (I used to cultivate white worms), so finicky eaters are frowned upon.

Thanks for the reply.
Cheers,
~Matt

if you want easy plants you can go for anubias too. if you want a cool clanup crew you could go for shrimp. ghosts arent expensive but are great. they eveen eat hair algea.cherries or crystals are nicer looking but are a bit pricey (around 4$ a pop).then you might want ottos for the algea.what would you think of apistos?cacs are great and are reltively easy to care for and breed but im probably not teaching ya anything.

I'm biased... My 15 hex has a large piece of wood mounted with java ferns and java moss. It helps add height. If you can get the frilly wedeluv?? java fern, they add a lighter green color and are my favorite. I also have a few different types of anubias, some african water fern, and chunks of wood with java moss attached. My tank cycled super fast with this. I have a blue ram and a school of cardinals. I really enjoy this set up... The only thing I think I would change is having a golden ram instead of the blue. I think I'd see him better. He's really personable though and fun to watch. He's very curious about his reflection. The cardinals are just really pretty.

I had dart frogs for a long time emg... They are AWESOME... but so much work to culture food... I'm jealous : )

hmmm...

Thanks for all of the replies so far! I've got some good ideas going.

I am wondering how well a single blue ram would do in my 10 hex... I'd love to get one, actually. The problem is finding one that looks decent. I don't know about other locales, but in Minnesota the quality of blue ram specimens, and of gold rams as well, has really dropped in my humble opinion.

Anyway, how does this sound for my 10 hex:
~one blue ram
~3-5 tetras
~a few ghost shrimp
~driftwood w/ fern and/or moss
~a few anubias sp. plants

My only concern is getting the pH to a good value for the ram, really. I'd prefer to do it naturally, but am not sure what I can do besides using peat in the Penguin Mini Bio-Wheel I'll have running on the tank.

Apistos would be awesome, of course, but I can't get any locally. Still, any specific species to recommend?

Cheers!

I'm not sure about a blue ram in a 10 hex...they need some horizontal space to spread out in and a regular 10 is about the limit for one blue ram....but, they are a pretty fish so give it a try with what you are planning on putting in there.

another option

I really think it would be fun to have a cichlid in there, so if anyone has an idea for a suitable species just let me know! Yeah, I know that a 10 hex is a bit too small for a ram, but still... they rule.

Cheers,
~Matt

lastly

I just thought of another idea...

Would any shell dwellers work in my 10 hex? I used to have a nice 30 gallon tank filled with Lamprologus multis and fry, but since starting college a few years back I had to get rid of the tank becuase it was too big to move and deal with. I've always wanted an L. brevis...

Cheers!
