I have a 75 gal fresh water tank. Ph is ok. My oscar is , should I say looks horrible. He has sores on each of his cheeks, his forhead looks like someone smashed it with a baseball bat and appears to look like a sore almost down through his mouth??? Acting weird like lying on bottom on his side, lying on bottom tilted to mostly his left, loss of appitite, over all looks like crap. I have 2 cat fish uneffected by any illness period. I have a pleco no problems and I have an alligator gar with like a cataract on his right eye, no other illness. There all in the same tank and get along fine. I have not introduced any new fish in tank in 6 months. These symptoms on the gar and oscar have popped up over the last 2 weeks or so. If anyone knows what it sounds like please let me know or give me ideas to go on. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Cichlids seem to be the most prone to HITH. Especially the big ones. I've heard it said HITH gets its start with prolonged exposure to low-level nitrates over a period of time. Check those and see where you're at. Keep the water as pristine as you can and give him some vitamin supplements if he will eat. It sounds like he may be too far gone, but you never know. I have a customer with a jaguar cichlid that's been battling some mystery illness for months, she's found a vet to take the fish to and has even given it injections of Baytril.
