if the power gos out should i unplug my canister filter anf when the power ges back on do i have to re pump the water into it befor i plug it in again

The canister filter sits below the tank, so it will not drain out when the power goes out and should not lose its prime. To test it unplug the filter and wait a few second then replug the filter in, it should just start right up.

In short power outages, I ignore the canisters. In long outages with unknown restart time, by 6-8 hours after the failure I open all the canisters and dump the media into plastic or glass trays/pans, with the media just barely covered with water. That is enough to keep the bacteria alive in the trays, where it would die off eventually in the sealed canister. When power come back I repack and restart the canister. Works for me.
