Hello...

So, I've had a number of tanks in the past. I've had fresh community, aggressive/cichlids, oscars, Africans, semi-aggressive mixes, and I've had a 55gal salt. Now, my lifestyle isn't really right for another salt tank, so I'm gonna go fresh. I just bought a 30gal and I'm trying to decide what type of tank to do this time. Whaddaya think? Another community? Maybe discus? Also, what type of gravel do you guys prefer? I used to always have light colored natural gravel, but it was always sorta blah; I'm not into the fantasy thing, so whaddaya think here? Final question...I always used undergravel filters, but now I notice a lot of people don't believe in them anymore (it's been a few years since my last tank). Do you guys used undergravels?? Thanks!!!

I have a community tank and I love it! I don't use a undergravel filter and mine works great! I have a 29 gallon and use a 40 gallon filter. That way the water is a little cleaner and I can have more fish:D

My favorite fish are mollies, platys, and gouramis. They go together well(at least mine do). The gravel that I use is dark green and dark blue and it looks pretty. I also have live plants which make it look better then the fake plastic ones. You also NEVER EVER have to clean them! That is the wonderful part about it!:D...so I would go with live plants if you wern't already planning on it. They are worth it!

I am not sure I enterred that link correctly... If it doesn't work, search the forums for UGF you will find (among other things) a thread titles "how do undergravel filters work" that has a good discussion.
I use ugf and like them. Currently mine is powered with an air pump, but when I used a powerhead I prefered it because it was quiet. I am about to try a reverse flow UGF for the first time.

I am really enjoying my 20G of choclate gouramis. I am not sure it would be your cup of tea, though. they are small mellow fish. they like soft, somewhat acidic water and high temps. like 86F. They are often kept in species only tanks, but I enjoy trying to find tank mates for them.
they do best in groups, and you could have quite a few in a 30G. very nice looking with low light plants. and they are smart seeming fish and interesting to watch.
I am just starting to learn about a category of fish that I have heard referred to as 'wild livebearers'.
As I understand it, they are non hybridized livebearers. These are also small fish i think, but maybe something different for you to look into. Someone here will know more about these I bet.
