I just learned that I will be getting a 40 or 45 gal from my girlfriends dad for free (always good). He hasn't had it up for a while, so I'm planning on replacing the filter. I currently have a ten gallon with 3 dwarf Gourami's and 2 platy's. I'm not sure if I want to move them into the 45 and build up, or just leave them were they are at and start over. I'm thinking about Angel's, or maybe trying my hand at cichlids. Not sure though. I'm also thinking about trying live plants too. What do I need for live plants, and what kind of filter would be best. My 10 uses a UGF, but I'm not sure what to use for a tank with plants. I'm not sure if a bio wheel or what kind of filter is best.

And I was looking for suggestions on fish scenerios for the tank. I'm looking at Angles, or Cichlids or something to go along with my Dwarf Gourami's. But any kind of Ideas will be good. I haven't even got the tank home yet. I'm just looking for Ideas now so I can get a plan going from the start. I do like a scenerio with a lot of variety and many kinds of fish. One thing I was considering was a few angels, my Gourami's, with a decent schooling species such as neons or a type of rasboras. But the cichlid idea really intrigeus me too. I guess I'm just looking for more ideas. Thanks ahead a time for the suggestions.

While I've never worked with a tank that large, I would like to remind you that Angels, while not typical of the family, are members of Cichlidae. Since that is the case, you might also want to try the Cichlid forum.

This is a general queston though, it's fine here.
Anyways, your probably not going to want neons witha angel.
You could put the dwarf gouramis will be fine in the 45 gallon, maybe with 2 bristle nose plecos, a a school of 6 congo tetras, some bleeding hearts, and maybe a couple corys for bottom feeding...that would be cool, with natural color gravel, some big rocks to make caves, and some java moss on the rocks...ahhhhh..
