Well, I finally got sick of the hair algae issue in my 29....took the fish out and did a complete water change and cleanup.

Did a super gravel vac....took all the plants out......changed the filter pad.....took out the driftwood and scrubbed it all down......etc....etc...blah blah blah....my, what fun !

Right now my fish are cooling thier fins in a teeny tiny one gallon with an airstone in it. There is one neon dwarf gourami, 3 otos and 2 german blue rams in there..... ......lol.....it's temporary so no nasty comments on the overstocking issue....lol....but if you want to pile on...go right ahead...I can take it... :p:

The other neon dwarf gourami I have in one of those little hang on the tank isolation tanks. He was looking a bit sluggish and not quite right so I had taken him out a few days ago to feed him up good and give him a few extra vitamins and special treatment.

I'm going to wait a day at least before putting everyone back in...and I'm hoping since I left all the gravel in and with the bio-wheel and all, that I won't have to go through another cycle....that would stink.....

I tried to find a siamese algae eater to put in that tank before I went through all this, but there were none to be found around here. Basically I think the problem was not enough plants in there...cause it surely wasn't a stocking issue....it only had 2 neon dwarf gourami, 2 blue rams and 3 otos in it. I have a 65watt 6700K light over it as well.

So, we'll see if this helps at all...if not, maybe I'll just break it down and turn it into a viverium for more dart frogs !!! :D

OK....I guess this is a boring thread.....but here's a before and after pic anyway......just for my lonely benefit.... ;)

This tank was beginning to look awful and ugly with hair algae...couldn't stand it anymore...I'm hoping this takes care of it. I had to really hack at the plants to get all the algae covered leaves off......the poor water sprite took the worst of it...it was such a pretty thing too.... :( I've got some aponogenton bulbs and water lily bulbs sitting in there...hope most of them come up.

Looks much better, surprizingly with my "overstocked" aquarium I have not had any algae issues, I even took algae coated rocks right out of the creek and put them in there with no problems. I am I just lucky???

wow, your before pic looks like my green tank, ha, ha. Has your algae come back, I can't seem to get rid of mine. It always returns. Oh and Emg, I know you were joking but we realize that was something temporary. That's different from blatant disreguard...

Well, this tank is definitely NOT overstocked..lol....I'm not sure why the algae cropped up but I had been feeding twice a day and also had increased the lighting from 40 to 65watts....so that probably had something to do with it...plus the fact there there really aren't that many plants in there. I'm hoping the bulbs I dropped in there all sprout..so far I only see one coming up.

I've decreased feeding to only once a day and with the complete emptying of the tank and fresh water...new filter cartridge....cleaned off plants.....I'm hoping it doesn't come back........I'll keep looking for an SAE....lol...just in case.

Lol Larissa...yeah I was kidding around....playing the "oh poor me everyone's ignoring me" whine....lol....but I'm over it now.. :soda:

Yeah.....I have happy plants !

After emptying this tank completely and cleaning it all out....I refilled it, fish are back in and .....my plants are pearling !! Well, the swords are anyway...but that's the first time any of my plants have pearled..(perled?...purled?) A steady stream of tiny bubbles coming from the tips of the leaves. It's a wonderful site !

I guess they didn't like all that crud in there either....lol....

I know this thread is a little old, but are your plants still doing their thing? Has the algae come back? I'm curious because I was wondering if cleaning a tank like that will actually remove all the algae or if you simply create conditions for another algae bloom.

(Nice looking tank by the way ... )

I bet the algea would have gone away on it's own with a little help from some SAE or Amano Shrimp, and the plants taking off.
