About 10 days ago I was doing routine maintenance on my 55g tank with a two piece glass top. As I lifted the glass top off it slipped in my hand and sliced right through the center glass that acts as a brace in the long tanks like the 55g. The whole tank bulged out and I thought it was about to burst. Drained half the water out and it returned to it's original shape.

All in all it turned out good for me because I was able to go to a fairly larger 60G and kept my 55g stand and was able to set the tank up to actually grow real plants this time instead of watching them die.

Anyway, be carefull with heavy tank equipment around that top brace, it broke easier than I thought it would and when it does break there is a danger of the tank bursting.

True, but I wasn't in the mood to reset a piece of glass. Especially if I didn't do it right and the tank bursts in the middle of the night.... :dive:
