my tank stinks really bad. yesterday i did almost a complete water change to put new gravel in and i did and everything was fine. then i woke up this morning and it smelled like cat pee and i figured it was the tank so i put my nose on top of the tank and sure enough it was the tank that smelled. i checked everything and all the levels are perfectly normal. then when i got home from school today i did about a 60% water change. and it doesnt stink as bad. is this the right thing to do in this situation?

please help me because my whole house stinks now and i have to have the windows open.

Thanks,
Troy

how long will this be because if its going to be days then i think my mom will be very angry to say the least.....

What does the tank have in it and how long has it been set up?

I wonder if you killed off a lot of the bacteria with the new gravel - did you remove the old gravel? Or cover it?

i replaced the old gravel with the new. i threw the old stuff out because it was ugly.

and there are two shubunkin goldfish in it. but i have a penguin 150 power fulter which takes care of all the waste and the water is crystal clear.

what size tank do you have?

it seems like you are probably cycling again. exactly which things did you check and what were your readings? ammonia/nitrites/nitrates?

does the penguin have a bio-wheel on it? I bet you messed up your cycle when you threw out all the old gravel.

10g. yes it has a bio wheel. and the readings are all perfectly normal except the ater hardness read "hard"
