I bought myself a new (bigger) plastic container for holding water for water changes (i.e. I have a pump to pump the water from it into the tanks)… I was looking for something sturdy and most of all I wanted something square and this was just perfect – except the product & bar code sticker was on the inside. I got most of it off clean but I CAN NOT get the remainder of the sticky stuff off. I’ve tried everything safe that I can think of: rubbing with salt, peroxide, vinegar, straight Prime, etc. etc. Actually, the Prime with salt worked pretty good, but in the end it’s still sticky feeling. What can I use to solvent this off?

Did you try a heat gun (or hair dryer)? This should be the first thing you try. Heat it really good (HOT) and start peeling.
Since you already have most of it off (the paper anyway), heat it up and use a plastic scraper of some sort, something rigid (credit card, plastic putty knife).
HTH!

you may want to try an oil, like olive or vegetable. it seems like they break down the adhesives pretty well.

my wife's pronouncement is that margerine will get the sticky off, but you will have to use something else to get the margerine off.

I just asked her cause she is pretty good at getting sticky off things. HTH

Oh Snake...you do realize you opened a huge door... :OT: :D

heh, yeah. . . i can't say the first thing that popped into my head. . .

Varsol or mineral spirits (also called paint thinner but no turpentine) will work wonders. And if left over night will off gas completely. I work with the stuff all the time and it is wonderful. It is best to wear gloves and use it outdoors to be safe (fumes and all).

Thanks all. I did originally try vegetable oil, because I have used baby oil for stickers in the past but the oil didn't work. I didn't try heat with a hair blower, but I did try boiling water. There's nothing to SEE. All my working just made this invisible layer of sticky, unless it's just my imagination by now. I guess I'll dig out the Imperial.

Goo Gone is what we use at work to remove label adhesives after we heat gun the paper off and if you look at my link below you'll see we are VERY fussy about whats used in a tank.
