I have a question that I think I know the answer to but I thought I would ask in case some one has some experience.

Background: I have a Green Terror that is roughly a year old. She is a female. I know this because she started laying eggs today. The year old part I know because the parents are in an 80 gallon tank at my house.

The tank I currently have her in is a 30 which is to small for her once full grown, it is just a temp tank until she is big enough to hold her own in a 120 I plan on putting her in.

The question is, I have 2 Electric Yellows in this tank with her. I believe one of them is a male based on behavior, quickness in growth, etc. I am hoping that they will cross breed but I am not aware of these species cross breeding. Has anyone had a Green Terror cross breed with anything? I am guessing not since the definition of species is a group whose members can interbreed. Thus two fish not in the same species group cannot breed.

But again, I know strange things can happen and thought I might get other's experiences on this topic.

I don't think new world cichlids could cross breed with african cichlids - nor would they want to, if you couild ask them - i'm sure they would say "why are you making frankenfish when there are so much better things you could be doing with your breeder tanks?". Leave the freak fish to the greedy "professional" breeders that are sending their crap to Pet Co, Walmart, etc. Some day, a lot of the fish we take for granted are not going to be around....only in captivity....lets breed true, or not at all.

I doubt they are going to crossbreed, in fact, i think teh electric yellows might eat the eggs! Well, I know an electric blue will eat the eggs I believe.

Not going to happen short of a miracle...
Most people will frown on species crossbreeding like you described.
Are you looking for a green and yellow fish or something???

I dont think they will crossbreed one main thing is their behavior. the mating behavior is completly different from that of the green terror. Your best bet is to try to cross a texas cichlid with ur green terror. They both have same behavior and average up about the same size. I have heard of this being very possible. If that happens u can name the call the babies "green texas terrors" I have seen convict, Jack dempsy hybrids and I own a firemouth, convict hybrid. I realize that hybrids are a lil more aggresive then normal....actually A LOT more aggresive.....just thoought I would let u know :)

I appreciate the quick responses.

I also didn't realize that this was such a touchy topic and would result in so many smart *** replies but there ya go. :D

This tank is just a tank I keep at work and really is just for small chiclids. Once they out grow the tank they go home and are replaced with a smaller fish. I have never cross bread fish, the thought just hit because the Terror just dropped eggs and there happens to be 2 electric yellows in with her. It was really of a "could it happen" rather than "I want mutant fish that I can contaminate the world with and all my evil plans will come to fruition muhahaha!!!!"

Oh well. I guess I could take her back home so that her eggs can be fertilized by her father which is in an 80 gallon at my house, maybe I can get some 2 headed fish that I can sell and contaminate the line that way.

HAHAHA

At this point, my question is answered. No, these species will not cross breed.

What have we learned? Don't ask a simple straight forward question, else you may get responses that you would not expect. :)

No Drake..that is not what we have learned at all....what we have learned is that these topics are better discussed with lots of beer....at a certain point in the discussion....say 11th or 12th beer...we would probably all start putting all kinds of fish in the tank to see what would happen..i myself would probably even start looking for a cat or rodent to throw in...what the hell...you see..even the most rabid "purist" can get along with a "blender breeder" with God's greatest gift....beer.
