How often should I clean/change my filter cartridges?

I gravel vac 2-4 times a week, and use pool filter sand as a media.

I use a hydor hot filter designed for a 75g tank, and a penquin 300gph powerhead. Also have 2 small java ferns.

I rinse my media in tank water weekly with my water changes, that seems to be sufficient, but it is usually pretty dirty too. I would say at least once a week, rinse, and if it is media you have to replace you can probably get away with replacing it every 6 weeks or so (staggered, so that you don't lose all your bacteria at once). I prefer sponges, etc. that don't have to be replaced, only rinsed, much cheaper
 
Thats why i like my hydor filter, it has two cartridges, so i dont dewstroy all my good bact upon changing.
