Hi, I am upgrading my 55g planted tank to a 75g. In my 55g, i have some river rock as my substrate. What i think i want to do, depending on the census here, put flourite in the new tank. However, the price per bag is pretty steep. So, should i go ahead and put the new substrate or stick to what i got? Second, how many bags of this stuff do i need? (Should i use 2in or 3in?)

I just set up my 60g and used Flourite after having terrible luck with the artificial colored gravel in my old 55g. I used the natural colored Flourite, not the ugly red stuff and used 3 15lb bags of Flourite. I also didn't like the cost and was on a budget so I mixed about 20lbs of the brown small river rock in with the natural Flourite to save a little money. The colors matched exactly the same doesn't have the mixed look at all. I would think you would need somewhere around 80lbs of substrate, maybe a little more
Mixing flourite up to 50% with a less expensive substrate is a good budget conscious alternative, which has worked well for me. 3"-4" will give you a good depth to establish a root system.
