at the lfs, they cleared out the alligator pit about 2 months ago because the alligator killed a 3 foot tiger shovlenose. They did keep overgrown cichlids in there, too. They went to the sale tanks and something that should be in a fish show rather that a crocodile pit was found. Out of about five average (but still great) foot long jaguar/texas cichlids there was one almost two feet long and instead of a nice siver and brown patern, It had the curved black spot-stripe then all the other scales ,even the fins, were a great shade of turquise     !!! !
the others went for $15 (one of those left too) this one is $25. Its still there and I'll get some pics when it opens on teusday. It is the kind that will (try to) atack your hand through the glass and can have no other tankemates. I'll start saving to add to the collection

not the 55. He'll have to be cramped in a 10 for a week or 2 until I can get a forty gal. for him to have all to his self (probably will buy him then ask for the store to hold him instead of the ten)

Have any of you ever see one looking like that? I think it might be a one of a kind color like that albino electric catfish I saw on that catfish only site. I searched in yahoo images, google images and a few more. that same pic was the only that showed and anyone with something like that would be insane to not show off his best fish. Expect pics on teuseday when the store opens again. how do I post pictures fom a digital camera?

This kind of post ain't my style, but I gotta speak up.

#1 - I don't think you should be putting a 2 foot fish in a tank that is only only what, 14in wide (not sure exactly how wide a 40g is, but not wide enough).

#2 - If you can afford a 40g setup, maybe you should tranfer some of those fish from your 55g. If I remember correctly it's a bit of a mishmash of fish that will get far too large for the 55 if they had it all to themselves...which they don't.

#3 - Getting more and more large fish is not going to feed your monkey if you know what I mean. Start keeping species tanks, and try appreciating these fish for thier interesting breeding and social behavior (which you will never see when they're crammed in with a bunch of other species) and not just for the novelty of keeping big fish.

I say this as someone who has been where you are now. I would get a fish, throw it in with other fish, enjoy the novelty for a while, but then that novelty would wear off, and I'd be craving another species of large cichlid. It wasn't until I started keeping fewer species, and concentrating on breeding that I was finally able to "keep the monkey fed". Good Luck.

I have had a few TX Cichlids in fact I have one now he looks like the one posted above. In fact they all looked like that. None of mine every looked like what you described. I didn't relize they got that big mine never got more then a foot. I wonder if this is some kind of a mixxed breed?
Looking forward to seeing the pict.
This sounds like a real cool fish.

I went to the store today (no camera). It looked great! But I noticed it had hole in head.I need a cure!!!

It turns out that he raised it to $35 and I could pay five bucks and up for a week holding and each additional day a dollar is added a days for a feeding cost. He also said No one else was really intested after it trying to attact them through the glass

40 gallon? HA! At 2 feet an 100 gallon will barely suffice.

Its not a turquoise JD is it?

No no the pic isnt mine.... Ive never kept JDs but ive seen these ones in the pet store before. If i recall correctly they were around 30 bucks... but maybe not that much.

If its a Jaguar, then yes its gonna need well over 100 gallon tank.

Jaguars rarely get over 14'', a 75g is perfectly fine for one specimen. I think the record wild caught fish is like 16''.

I doubt this is a jaguar... maybe a dovii, but not a jag.

Yeah, but he's already stated that this one is almost two feet long. This was shortly before he stated that he would hold it in a 10g untill he could get a 40g set up for it.

I know, I'm confused

All I know, is that if it really is 2 ft, it's not a jag.

somewere from 16"-20". I've never herd of a dovii. It Is partly a jaguar. I talked with the owner and the mother (jaguar) of that great fish was bought 13 years ago and died a month ago. The dad was a texas cichlid. Can hole-in head leave scares after it is cured? he said the past holder gave him a small tank to himself because he was to aggresive and the water wasn't cleaned so hole in head developed and those holes are only scares.

If the fish is 16-20'', one of the parents was something bigger than a jag or texas.

Dovii are in the same genus as jags but get 2ft. Their sci name is Parachromis dovii if you would like to look them up.

A 4" difference in size is pretty big, there are not a lot of cichlids that will get to 20" but there are a few that will get to 16". Like Pumaward said the parents would have to be a bigger fish than a jag and a texas for it to grow as big as you are saying. Are you sure that is what he is selling it as?

Nice.

The OP wanted to keep this "2 foot" "jag" in a 10 gallon that isn't 20" long. Wow. And I sincerely doubt it was two feet long.

The "mystery fish" fish has probably been dead nearly that long too.
