I used to have fluros but have since changed to metal halide. my fish used to glow with the fluros but now they actually look quite dull. Is this because the metal halide is a warmer light than my fluros at 5400K or is it because the metal halide is a point light or is it both? I would love to get that cool looking light back in my tank but what temp metal halide bulb would give similar results to say Aquaglo tubes or NEC Tri-Phosfor tubes?

5400K is too yellow. You can add a different color flourecent bulb (red, blue, ect), that will help.

PS-- Why do you want a 5400K bulb??

I was told that 5400K was daylight and that it was what I should use for freshwater.. I can certainly see that it is very yellow though, perhaps a different colour lamp for my metal halide light would be better but what temp?

i think daylight is up in the 6700K range, definitely more of a blue/white light.
