well, for one reason or another the Bio-Spira I searched all over for and was so happy to find, didn't work.

At all.

Not even a little.

Me and my 5gal bucket are becoming great friends. . . . thankfully the blisters are going down and the callouses are getting tougher.
 
well, i'm using a sump filter for one reason, but i have added some media to it, on top of the bioballs. hopefully the little critters will make their way down and start multiplying.

that is all. . . . gotta go spend some time with my bucket now.
 
Funny!
I have an even tougher time with my 75g - being quite a short person I have to get up on a chair to 'hoover' the sand - and when I'm putting treated water back in have to get up on the chair to tip it. It's like a gym workout...

At least it's helping the old flying squirrel under arms to firm up...

my tank is only 13 inches high, altogether 3 feet off the ground, so the actual removal and addition of water is no problem. when i take it out, the bucket goes on the floor. when it's time to refill, i put the bucket on a chair and siphon out the water into the sump. the trouble is hauling the full buckets all the way outside to dump them out. that ends in very wet shoes almost every time.
 
So why don't ya just get a python, or make your own DIY python for about $30? Its better than complaining, saves a lot of time as well. Also just because you have a sump filter doesn't mean you couldn't just throw some filter material in there, or for that matter right into the back corner of the tank, it will populate your substrate.
