This morning I awoke to find two of my mollies with some tiny cottony patches on their tail fins. I know it's not ick, but could use some insight in diagnosing this. Also, how do I treat since I have live plants in the tank? It's a 55 gallon with a smorgasbord of other residents.

I would remove the 2 fish that are afefected aned put them in a seperate container with the water from the aquarium and give them a salt bath.

use 1 level teaspoon and mix in seperater container, onece dissoved add to container youre going to put them in. Make sure you use a full gallon of water.

I wouldn't suggest a salt bath personally. I tried it a few times in the past and it didn't help... only succeeded in harming the fish more. An effective salt bath takes a lot more salt as well, more along the lines of 1/2 a cup of salt per gallon.

I would recommend getting a 5-10g q-tank, a good antifungal remedy (not mela or primafix), and adding 2tbsp of salt per 10g. Raise the temperature to 82F, and do daily 50% water changes, replacing salt and medication as needed.

You can also try the betadine method. This involved getting betadine (find in first aid section of the grocery store), soaking a q-tip in it, net the fish, then dabbing the affected areas on the fish with the betadined q-tip. Always avoid the gills and mouth.
