hello again,

i dont know if this is the right place for this thread but i'll go ahead anyway..
when i woke up this morning, i headed straight to the tanks to check (i always do this every morning) if everything's going well..

upon reaching my cichlid split tank, i noticed that there was no water movement, and then i saw 2 of my cichlids crashed on the bottom with one of them lying upside down.. the water smelled like burnt plastic/rubber so i figured that it was the powerhead that gave in , there were black things and some oil/grease floating in the water, i then tried to remove the powerhead but was probably in a state of panic, i forgot to unplug and got electricuted a bit, nothing serious though, just a small charge i guess.. so i unplugged and then removed the powerhead.. the 2 cichlids were still breathing and i figured that i have to try to do something and save these things

i removed them from the tank coz the water smelled really bad i feared that it may hace some toxic substances or something, the 2 were breathing really heavily so i put them in new treated water w/ temporary aeration and then ran to the nearest shop to buy a new powerhead.. luckily there are 3 shops w/in walking distance from my home

i then made a 90% H2O change (scooped out the floating debris and grease-like substances) with the tank and put the fishes back in

for the first hour, they were still crashed at the bottom, at least the other one was no longer upside down.. after the 1st hour, their breathing started to normalize a bit, and they were starting to move around a bit but it seemed like they were getting exhausted easily..

i tried to put some food after the 2nd hr just to see how they'd react, one started eating but not as energetic as it did before.. the other one was just slowly swimming around and resting at the bottom alternately..

after 5 hrs.. i tried to feed the other one (the one who went upside down), it started eating but only the sinking ones.. it didn't want to go to the surface..

what concerns me is that there is still a faint scent of burnt plastic/rubber in the water..
should i do major water change again?
pls help

also, any other comments as to what i did wrong and what i should do next will be highly appreciated..

thanx to anyone who will respond

im just so stressed out ryt now and i dont think my brain is functioning properly

thanx again

Horrible experience. I'd be concerned about stressing the fish further with more action. If you can still see oil on the surface of the water you might try siphoning this off, but I wouldn't stress them with additional water changes. Paper towels can sometimes be used on surface contaminants but then you risk introducing new ones.

If your fish aren't likely to jump. try leaving the lid open. The warm water will encourage volatile compounds to evaporate.

Maybe turn off the light to relax them a bit, then get yourself a drink.

You've done a great job already now I'd wait it out and hope for the best.

Good luck.

i can't see anymore of that oily substance in the water..

its the smell that im concerned about..

they are starting to swim now, their occassional resting at the bottom has somewhat lessened and are starting to flare at each other sometimes..

how wud i know if i need to have a water change again?

thanx for ur time man
i appreciate it

Since they are improving at a fairly steady pace, I would give them some time... if they start to go down hill even slightly, do a 50% change.

ok thanks

im starting to feel better hehehe
what a stressful thing to start my day

thanx again

i have a powerhead.. submersible pump (28W 0.2A 1300L/H)

it has two nozzles.. one makes underwater current and blows out bubbles and the other one has a hose that leads the water into a filter box..

m not sure if im answering ur question though
maybe i misunderstood wat u were asking?

can't give the brand name..
it's written in japanese/chinese and i don't know how to read it

it still smells like burnt stuff..
gonna open it tomorrow, i haven't seen the insides of these things yet lol

i can't picture it catching fire coz its under water.. i don't even understand wat happened..

as for the frankencichlids they look fine now.. dropped in a swordtail each (excess from the beggining to be overpopulated swordtail pond) to see how they wud react, they did what was expected of them to do.. and they are starting to show a lot of energy now..

and btw, the smell of burnt plastic/rubber in the water went away..
does that mean no more H2O changes as of now? i mean back to the weekly routine?

thanx ppl

i really had a headache yesterday lol :duh:
