I just realize that one of my neons is missing an eye  !! It looks pretty well healed, I've had the fish for at least 6 months, not sure when the eye disappeared. How does that happen!?!?! You would think that would have killed it...

We have a neon with only one eye. We call him One Eyed Jack. LOL.
We had a female betta in the tank and one day when I introduced new fish to the tank (2 more rasbora's and 2 female platys) She freaked out and started eating eyeballs!!! :thud: I was mortified. She ended up taking both eyes out of a new rasbora (My DH euthanized him for me). I mistakingly thought at first it was the platy's and removed them..only to watch her take the eye out of one of the neons. That was about 3 weeks ago and he is doing just fine. He has adjusted to his new view on things, eats great and acts like a normal neon. I've grown rather attached to him. Meanwhile...the female beta was tried and convicted and sentenced to live her life out in a 2 gallon bowl. I think introducing the platy's and more fish pushed her over the edge for some reason
I have heard from others of betta's going after the eyes of other fish. A friends male betta would go for the eyes of fish when she put him in a community tank...he went back to the store and two fish ended up losing eyes from him.

Nothing in the tank seems to bother the neons, which is actually why I am kind of alarmed  !!! I would rather know that something did it than just that my fish has randomly lost an eye :o ... I guess I should be happy that hes doing ok, the tank can't be too bad if he was able to pull through with no interference on my part.

Any other eyeless fish folks?!?!?

I can't get the image of your poor little neon swimming along minding his own buisness when OOPS.. "Darn...my eye just fell out!" ...gave me the giggles, I guess I have an odd sense of humor.

Yep, your water quality must be A Okay. You would think after something like that happening they would be just ripe for a bacterial infection. I think he will do just fine. They seem to adapt so well.
I once had a male swordtail that somehow lost one of his front fins. It was sad but kind of funny too. He could get wherever he wanted, but always seemed to swim towards where he was going at an angle. We called him Gimpy.

Ok, now I just noticed that one of my new corys is also missing an eye  !! They were in QT for 3 weeks before joining the main tank, and looked pretty good. One died for unknown reasons, I just assumed I got a bad fish, b/c water is good. I haven't lost any fish besides that one in many many months.

Is there something that causes eyes to pop out  ?!?!?!

I just bet you got an eyeball eater in there. Who else lives with them? I'm really sorry about the fish.

Almost all of the fish in the tank have been together for almost a year. The new additions are just adding to already existing schools, so you would think that the other fish would have had problems. The only "new" fish are clown loaches. They do seem to follow around the others sometimes and look like they are "nibbling" on them (like they have a piece of food stuck to them!), but its not aggressive, its very gentle. And they seem to only do this to the platys

Yeah, you know, when fish eat they don't just nibble...they generate negative pressure to create suction and bring the food into their moths via solvent drag. I wouldn't doubt it if one of your fish (likely the loaches) aren't nibbling and sucking out eyeballs here and there. In fact, I'd probably bank on it. Eyeballs don't just fall out. If the eyeball is cleanly sucked out and there are no jagged bites or anything, then there probably is very little broken skin/flesh for introduction of infection. Anything's possible, but I'd guess that that is probably a pretty "clean" wound, and won't cause the fish problems...except for the whole loss of site thing.

well, both eyeless fish seem to be doing well...The cory has a bit of a slant to it, but was cruising the tank for food after the water change today. I am still worried about the whole situation though. I still kind of doubt that it is due to another fish, even when the clowns "bother" the other fish, it is a quick follow and seems very gentle. However I'm at a loss for whats going on, so I'm keeping an "eye" ( ) on everyone

that just recently happend to me. I think my betta took out the eye of my cory catfish. Not to worry, he still seems OK to me
