ok so im in the lfs (petsmart) and i got three ghost shrimp for my 10g (even though they will probably be gone soon as a snack i wanted to see how they would do) and i noticed they carry pacus. so i stroll over to the lady in the fish department and i ask "what are these guys like and how big do they get" and she said "oh no more than about 6 inches to a foot which isnt very big" and i said "ok so i could put this in my 10g right" and she said "yes". and i said "ok from what ive read on these guys and from pictures of seen they get in excess of three feet long and theyre tankbusters" then she just stared at me like i was stupid and then i just left it at that and asked for the ghost shrimp and left.

just wanted to see if the particular lfs was as bad as the others ive been to as ive never been there before.

PetsMarts don't carry dogs/cats (thank goodness, they do offer adoption days, which I like). I also saw 5 Red Pacus at my local PetCo. Poor things :mad2:

I remember once I started a converation with an employee there (not the fish person, but another employee looking at the fish) and she then started to tell me about all the fish she had in her 10 gal. It was waaaay overstocked, and I told her. She said she was planning on moving them to a 20 gallon, which would stil;l be overstocked :thud: When I told her I only had one fish in my 20 gal she looked at me like I was INSANE then walked away.

yea i noticed that at petsmart and petco it says on the pacu price sticker that they only get to about a 12 inches ... its sad that some places just want to make the sale :cool2: but on another note pacus are pretty kool lookin fish

I saw about 5 RB-Pacu's at wal-mart today(10gal) and they were covered in ich. Atleast the light was out so I'm guessing that means they aren't for sale. :(

you guys want to hear something even more stupid...

I go to a LFS and they had some young blue rams. So I asked the employee how much they were because they werent marked. The employee was some high school kid, tells me the price and asks me what kind of tank I had. I tell him I have 55 gallon community talkd planted and lightly stocked (2 angelfish, 9 white clouds, 2 otos, and 1 tiger pleco). You hardly can see the pleco and otos because of the plants and driftwood.

He says, "oh no no. these rams are cichlids. cichlids are type of fish that can get very big and very mean. They can only be with other cichlids and a bigger tank"!!!!!!

I must say that I stoped in to a wall mart the other day and they had just received their fish. The employee was checking them in and actually refuseing some that he did not think looked healthy or active enough. I do not know what his criteria was but at least he was taking some sort of proactive measures for keeping healthy fish...

His heart is in the right place, it is his information that is bad. I hope he learns more b/c he may be very good once he becomes more knowledgable. ;)

The Petsmarts near me don't seem to know much they never have any answers to my fishy questions, or I get the canned response, "This is not my usual dept." I called both of them a few days ago to see if they had any Otos cause the 3 dedicated LFS near me were all sold out. Both of them told me the same thing "We don't have them." I even asked one dude to go LOOK for me cause he answered instantly and didnt check. Ended up going there anyway to get my new emperor filter the same day, saturday...

Walked in (this was less then an hour after I called) and saw a whole tank FULL of otos, had to be about 25 in there at least... Once again I asked the guy if he had otos. Once again he said NO. So I asked if he was the one I spoke to previously on the phone, he said he was. I said here is a tank full of them. He looks at the label and saya "Oh, otocinclus? You asked for otos, if you would have said otocinclus I would have said yes."

in reference to the rams and cichlids - though the guy may be misinformed, i think it's definitely better to think something is more aggressive than it actually is than to think that every type of fish is peaceful and wants friends.

my PetSmart doesn't actually have cats and dogs from breeders, but they do get some from local shelters and have them available for sale. Last time i was there all they had was a cat. One huge, massive, 17lb ball of orangey-brown fur. It was the size of a bobcat. Garfield on lasagna AND steriods.
