I thought I had gotten this figured out since I finally understood the cycle and all my ammonia/nitrite/Nitrate tests were good. But prior to my 30% water change on Monday my ph tested at close to 6.0. My water out of the tap tests at 6.8. After doing some research here at Ac it looks like my ph can change depending on the kh of my water? I guess my next course of action should be to get a kh test and figure out what's going on there.

And I read in another thread yesterday that amquel can have an effect on kh/ph. I currently use amquel+ so should I switch to prime?

And while I'm rambling would adding two plants to my 10 gal tank change the ph??

And lastly should I be worried about all this? My fish seem healthier and more active than at any time since I brought them home.

This has definitely been more work than I first imagined but I'm still having a blast keeping everybody healthy and happy.

Often times, water out of the tap will change. What you can do leave some water sitting out over night and test it for the pH. If it changes, then you should consider setting up a storage bin for water to degas in.

Checkin your kH is also a good idea. I've never heard about amquel effecting pH, but I do believe Prime is better anyway as it doesn't claim to detoxify ammonia.

I'll try that tonight and also see if I can pick up a kh test to see what's going on. After searching through different threads it seems like it's a common problem for newbies.
