heeeeeeyyyy guys and gals. I was doing a little shopping the other day and I ran across some Valliant Chocolate Gouramis, or Spaerichthys vaillanti, for about $15 bucks apiece. After googling im still pretty in the dark about basic care. Should i just go with standard maintenance for a choc gourami? Does anyone have any experience with these? Thanx in advance^^

the water has to be perfect for these guys so they dotnb get infections and parasites

thanks for the input, danielle_adam. My water is pretty flippin clean with large routine waterchanges and good filtering. Not to mention the added help from the plants^^.

The info im looking for is for the Valliant variety of chocolate gouramis. Im not sure if the color is the only difference. But thank you ;)

p.s.- my landlord raised my rent because my water usage was more than he expected ><

I have seen them here and only once in person at my LFS.

As for the regular chocolates, their difficulty is WAY over rated. I have kept them on several occasions, and 50% water changes a week are plenty in moderately stocked tanks. The only thing is will say is that I do think they should be in softer water. Last time I had them, they were in water with a gH of 8, if they got wounds, they didn't heal well and would eventually get secondary infections, but 2-3 weeks after the wound. They also are really easy to get to accept flake for food, at least IMHO.

Chocolates are one of my favorites and have a ton more personality than any other gourami specie I have seen :).

that site said to keep the ph below 5. Is that correct?? None of my tanks are that low. (ive never even heard of tanks that low)

I had better health out of mine when I kept them at ph 6 or just below. I did keep it that way by crashing out the buffer with ph lowering chemicals though. I tried keeping them later not useing ph down and without attaining that ph even with softer water I had more trouble with keeping them healthy.

I can't say my original approach is the best way to get sub 7 ph, but the fish did better with that ph.

I have no experience with the Vaillanti, but there's a good chance that they will at least need to have it below 6. They are a rare specie, are probably wild caught and most likely won't adapt well to normal aquarium life.

after carefull consideration i chose to return the gourami. I suppose im not willing to set up a tank just for her. Really i didnt even think that a gourami (of any kind) wouldnt be compatible with my water. I suppose im used to mass bred fish. >.< Thanks everybody for your input
