10 Gallon Tank Question

Recently I got a 3-gallon Eclipse tank for my desk at work. I put in 2 African Dwarf Frogs and a bamboo shrimp. It's pretty heavily planted w/ around 7 various plants. It has a smaller gravel substrate. The temperature runs around 78 to 80 degrees throughout the day. I have a 25w thermometer in it, but it hardly every runs... I set it to 75 degrees. The water stays warm like that naturally, I guess.

I have decided the frogs don't have enough space. I'm going to upgrade to a 10 gallon tank. I plan to keep it well planted but not as dense as the current tank (might leave open areas with heavily planted corners). I also plan to change up the substrate. I'll get some laterite and the current gravel and use it as a first level which I will cover with some kind of sand (suggestions? I want a white one).

Is there any fish that fits the following requirements:

1. Can live in 10 gallons
2. Digs in sand substrate (I want him basically to keep the sand mobile for me)
3. Is peaceful and won't eat 1.5" frogs
4. Can handle tropical 78-80 degree heated water

THANKS!

Maybe a couple of Botia Modesta (Orange Finned Loach). They grow to only 4" and are notorious burrowers and diggers. Although they are somewhat shy and you may not see them all the time.

a small school of Cories would work well

Not sure how the cories will tolerate the warmer temps...they generally like the water temps in the high 60's to mid 70's....they might be ok though.....they're good fish for stirring substrate..

Yoyo loach are also one of the smaller loaches...get about 4 inches. They're a good bottom fish as well.

I have a tank with white "reef" sand in it that looks very nice. I saw a 20lb bag of it at PetSmart once for about 20$. It's safe for freshwater as well as saltwater tanks.

Have fun setting up your new tank Mr Fish !

I was thinking about cories too. I'd have to find one small enough that could tolerate higher temps, though.

Malaysian trumpet snails are good at stirring up substrate. I have corydoras habrosus in my 10 gallon community tank set at 78F and not only are they doing well, they are continuously spawning! They are about 3/4". I am not familiar with the frogs, are they safe around little fish? My corys are really too small to do too much sand sifting which is why I have the snails.

Good luck!

Khulie loaches are thin bodies and stay small. But like many sand burrowers may or may not be seen very often. But it sounds like you don't have a problem with animals that are docile and hide a lot based on what you already have.

Otherwise the Trumpet Snails are a great idea.

As the writer in the thread below notes African Dwarf frogs and Clawed frogs are very different, with the clawed frogs growing much too large for a 10g. My clawed frogs (front feet not webbed) have eaten a young angelfish (nickel sized body) before being moved to larger quarters. Mine were sold as dwarf frogs but I didn't know the difference and my son wanted them. The true dwarfs are essentially never sold as albinos but the clawed frogs are often available as albinos. Since learning the difference I've yet to see an ADF for sale in NJ despite what the tanks say.
