Hi all.

A couple weeks ago I began adding Marine Snow for my corals. A short time after that I started to notice a brown slick on the surface of the water. The water remains clear. I have sinced switched to DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton because it is reportedly a better product. There is still a slight amount of scum on the surface. Any connection here between these two products and what I am finding? I am very careful about overfeeding.

I have a 30g and am using a remora skimmer with the pre-skimmer box. (This box is supposed to only allow water from the surface into the skimmer but it doesn't seem to do that at all.) I have been removing the scum by dipping a cup into the tank.

1 long nose hawkfish
1 gramma
leather coral, polyps/buttons

What does everyone think?

you might try removing the pre-skimmer and see

It's just crud, it will sit on the surface tension of the water. Sounds like you need more surface agitation to help break it up so the skimmer can pull it out. Aim a powerhead towards to surface to create more turbulance but not enough to splash water everywhere.
