Alright, ive heard of water evaporating in saltwater tanks but never in fresh, but lo and behold I seem to have that. It seems like every 1-2 weeks my water level drops about an inch, is this normal or is something wrong? Ive checked for leaks everywhere, in the tank, in the filtration, not a drop of water anywhere, like I asked before, is this normal?

you hear of it happening in SW tanks so often because evaporation can lead to problems due to a higher level of salt in the water. i'm just curious as to why you thought regular water wouldn't evaporate? it does it all the time when it's not in a tank. . .

if you aren't doing the water changes, then that is a normal rate of evaporation when the air is pretty dry. but you should be doing the water changes. if all you do is top it off with new water, the assorted minerals in the water will build up to high levels (not to mention high nitrates) and start to negatively affect your fish.

As sated that is normal. I found that when I covered all opening on my tank it greatly reduced the water loss. Now I loose a lot less, but I still use it for a guage for when to change the water if I loose track of what day it is ;)

Perfectly normal. I do weekly water changes and I loose probably a half inch in each tank per week. I don't mind though, because my house is rather dry in the winter so it's kinda like having a really cool humidifier! :D

i never thought of it that way iamgroovy. now i can tell my parents something good about haveing 6 tanks in our house.

im sorry but this had to be the dumbest question ever.

What was your point in stepping into this thread to say that? Regardless of what you think, this submitter had a question about something they didn't understand, and got some good answers.
