Well, Got a Sony 42" HDTV.
Here is a Google search for some details (I do not know what companies you prefer)

I also have a ReplayTV machine, its similar to a Tivo.

I think will be getting cable this week as well.

Also have a Panasonic surround sound system.

My questions:
#1- What do I need to get HDTV? Or is it all ready to go?
#2- When I plug the coax into the Replay, it takes that signal, either records, or sends it to the TV. All signals from the Replay go to the TV via RCA plugs. You can also take a coax line and go from the replay to the TV, so you get signal when the machine is off. When I do turn it off, the signal is VERY fuzzy. And I do not know why. Is it the cord, or have you guys experienced this too?
#3- The sound. The TV has 2 audio out jacks on the back (RCA). They only work if you disable the speakers on the TV (via the menu). Which I do. I run the RCA lines from the TV, to the TV inputs on the surround sound.
I was hoping to get everything in surround sound (even regular TV).
But nothing happens. I turn the DVD player on, but no sound comes out. Ideas here?

Thanks for your help!

I won't profess to being an expert..

but, congratulations.!

It sounds like you don;t have cable TV now, so (Assuming my assumption is correct)

1. The TV has a HDTV tuner built in, meaning you'll be able to get broadcast TV in HDTV.. Hopefully you have a suitable antenna and that should be all you need.

2. Doesn't sound like the Antenna signal going into the replay TV is being passed through correctly.. assuming the replay TV isn't HDTV then get a splitter before the replay TV and have 2 outputs going to the replay TV (And use it as normal) and one going to the TV itself.

3. I wouldn't imagine regular broadcast TV would be in surround sound (I'm sure someone will correct me if/when I'm wrong.) so don't worry about that.. also don;t worry about the replay TV for the same reason, just worry about DVDs and have the output from the DVD player go straight to your surround receiver.. that's probably your only option.

In short...

* If you're looking into cable, look into Digital cable with HDTV, that's probably your best bet for getting HDTV TV, you may have better audio options depending on the cable box..
* Forget about putting the sound from some device through the TV and into your receiver, it should either go directly, or you're not going to be able to use surround sound anyways.
* Probably the biggest gain you could have right now would be a progressice scan DVD player, with the display going to the TV< and the audio going straight to the receiver.

But once I get cable I will not need the antenna, correct? I understand I have to pay for the HDTV for all the channels, but all I am worried about is the main channels, and sports channels which are free I think.

Actually, it did this on the last one.
So I just need to get a "Y" coax connector, and have it go to the TV? So that way the replay can record, while I watch?

I do not think it comes in the "surround sound" format on LOTS of the channels. But most of the major shows are available with that little extra "encoding" or whatever that has surround.
That really doesn't matter even, the sound should be coming out the speakers, surround format or not.

Like I said above, Im just worried about the major channels, which are broadcast in free anyway.

Like I said, even if its not in the "surround sound" format, there SHOULD be some "regular" sound coming out.

Thats what I have. I have a multi-disk DVD changer surround sound system. Both the audio/video go into the TV, through RCA cables. So when I watch a movie, the sound comes out through the TV, and through the speakers. Which, if you think about it, I really dont need that audio cable going to the TV really.

This new TV has plenty of inputs on it. So, My DVD, Tivo, Video Game, and any other device I have on there, each has its own channel. So don't think I have a million Y's and they are all plugged into one port :)

Hmm.. whether you need an antenna or not would depend on your cable company and what package you buy.. If you get a HDTV package, it probably lists the channels you'll get, if there's obe not listed that you get with your antenna, keep the antenna.. otherwise you should be covered.

outside of that, I think everything should work out once you have cable.. as a general rule, the sound signals (from the cable box, DVD or whatever) should go straight to the receiver if you want surround sound.. and the Video signal should go to the TV..

I really don't know much about the sound with broadcast TV.. but if you get digital cable and it has all the channels you get via normal TV, you should be covered..

If your worried about sound. do whatever you can through your cable box, if you have no option, do it through the TV...

Well, for some odd reason it started working today. So I have surround sound. That problem is fixed.

As for the replay TV, would a Y connector work then? It would split it into 2 different lines then? Would not effect anything?

Umm for the antenna.. it should work.. the only possible problem would be signal degridation.. and you'd just have to check for that

I also have cable and a Mitsubishi HDTV. I run the sound separate to my reciever and bypass the TV since those speakers (built into the TV) are small and will not sound that good. You don't need to connect audio to your TV - that is if you already have a surround set-up. HTH

Well, I did some further experimentation.

I think the surround sound TV will be more of a PAIN, because the only way you can control the sound volume is with the DVD remote. Not THAT bad, but when you have to turn the DVD player on, and use 2 remotes, that gets to be a pain.
And if you ever want to watch without the surround, you would have to go into the menu and re-enable the speakers.

My main question right now (Which will determine ALL my other problems if it works), is if I get a Y splitter, would that be like 2 different signals?
Basically, take one end to the Replay, and one to the TV?
That way, I can have the replay record something, while watching another show on the TV at the same time. And then, I would not have to use the replay for anything other than recording.
