New equipment cleaning question

I am looking into getting some second hand stuff and was wondering what the best method for cleaning it would be. I am buying a second hand sump with pumps and heaters. I don't want to use cleaners which could potentially "stick" to the equipment and eventually end up in the tank.

Whats the safest method?

hot water is a good starting point. Vinegar works, and Ive heard recommendations for oxyclean, though Ive never used it myself.

you could use a new toothbrush for abrasive action to get the gunk off.
Hot water should work fine.
Besides if the equipment you got is dirty, chances are after a month in your tank it will be just as dirty.

ok thanks. I was just concerned about any foreign bad "gunk" collected on the equipment. I cleaned it up and it looks pretty good.
