Anyone know what this guy is?? He is only an inch and a half now, really interesting to watch, darts all over the tank. The LFS said it was a butterfly pleco, but this is obviously wrong. Thanks in advance!

Those are Hillstream Loaches. They prefer cooler temp tanks with fast flowing currents. Nice fish though! :)

Yep, they actually commonly get called Butterfly Plecos even though there is a true butterfly pleco (L052). They are fun to watch! Especially if you have a powerhead in your tank they will stay by that and they look like they are having so much fun! Good luck with them, they are great fish!

Thanks for the help!! Yes it is a fun fish to watch. I have a lot of current (Aquaclear 50 on 33 gallon full blast), as well as a Hydor Ario 3 Turbo air pump, so I think the water is well oxygenated. He seems very healthy. He does not hide at all, and is on the glass most of the time eating algae. That's all he seems to eat, I never see him forage in the gravel (maybe he does at night). I am getting a piece of driftwood for him, and that should complete the picture. The water is tropical (78 degrees) and I read that they like cooler water, but he seems to be doing fine. I also read that the pet store versions are more tropical and can do well in those temps. Further reading suggested that they should be kept in at least threes, but I really do not see the need to get anymore: this one is a complete loner, and seems to be doing great ( I have had him a month ) without any of his own kind. Anyways, great fish, eats lots of algae, and fun to watch. Stay small as well I have read. Funny they are not more popular. One of those stories that are few but far between: Pet store messes up, but ends up being a far better deal!!
