View Full Version : Plants for big gravel and low light?

Hi, I'm just setting up my 75 and I'm wondering what my options are. It came with pretty big gravel which I doubt would be good from most plants. And the light fixture only goes to 40 watts. It will be near a very large south facing bay window though and will get a considerable amount of sunlight from that but no direct light.

Can I grow Java Fern, Water Sprite or maybe some cryptocoryne? Do I absolutely have to have more light? I don't have to have the plants thriving but I do want them to live and look decent. Could I set up a corner or side with sand or something under a thin layer of gravel for rooted plants or should I stick with non-rooted plants?

Also, I know it's recommend to have 1-3 watts per gallon, but how does that effect the fish. Don't most fish like it a little darker then that?
