Hello. I switched a 10 gallon tank to a sand substrate 6 or 8 weeks ago so the cories would be more comfortable. Their barbels have completely grown back in, nice and long.
Last Thursday I fed them a slice of cucumber for the first time. As others who have done this know, the vegetable didn't sink on its own. My solution was to use two magnets (one inside the tank, one outside) to hold down the cucumber slice near the bottom where the cories would find it.
I left the one magnet in the tank for 2 days because I had to be out of town. When I got back it was dirty looking. I figured it was covered in some kind of sediment, maybe snail poop.
I removed the inside magnet and when I tried to rinse it I realized that the junk wasn't rinsing off. Upon closer inspection I saw that the magnet had attracted iron filings somehow while inside the aquarium!
I guess they came from the sand! I really don't want to change the substrate AGAIN!
