I have my first acrylic tank. I'm guessing a typical stick on thermometer will still work. How about oil or vaseline for adhering the background? Any problem there? Normally, I would paint a glass tank, but I don't want to paint this one. (I suppose I could with a latex)

No the stick thermometer will not work, acrylic has much better insulation properties than glass and therefore you will not get the correct temperature reading. As for sticking a background or painting the the tank, becarefull of what you use b/c some chemicals will erode the acrylic away.
