ok so i read an article about what 2 feed ottos and they said a piece of zuchinni so i put one in the tank. it also said to leave it in there no more than 3 days b/c ottos like when it gets softer. when i woke up in the morning, the next day, the water smelled aweful and was filthy as heck. i took the zuchinni out and did about a 40% water change. it didnt change anything. will this go away with water changes? is it harmful to my fish?(neon tetras and black phantoms and ottos)

I think water changes will help most, and it shouldn't hurt anything, but I would test your water, make sure you aren't having any ammonia/nitrite spikes from too much decayed food. Maybe you could try cucumber next time and see how they like it? All I do is peel it and stick a slice in the tank with a veggie clip. I've left it in for up to a day and a half and it has never fell apart...

it will clear up with a few water changes .. will just take some time .. we did that with lettuce and it made it cloudy as heck ..if you are gonna feed them veggies then just leave it in there for the day .. not any longer then it wontgo cloudy .. if he likes it soft then let it sit in some water for a lil while before you put it in the tank ..
dont worry water changes will clear it up ..

blanching it (throwing it in boiling water for 30-60 secs) will soften it up, and kill any fungus that may be on the skin.
