Hi everybody, I'm new here and this is my first post. This seems like a really nice place. I think I'm going to like it here.
I did a search for mag drive and I really didn't get much back. I'm setting my 90 gal. up again. I used to drive it with a LG 3 and man that thing was loud. It sounded like a crane falling apart. So anyway I was thinking about a mag drive 9.5. Anyone have opinions or experience with these? I'll be using to drive an Ocean Clear and t-ing off the output to a co2 reactor as well as plumbing the return to the bottom of the tank and the top of the tank as a spray bar. Hope that makes sence. Thanks for your help.

Glad you joined our little group! Hope we can help you, and learn from you as well.

Ive used quite a few mag pumps...

I actually prefer the dolphin pond line submersible pumps over them, as they seem to be more reliable, but Mag drives fair pretty well.

There is no submersible pump I know of that is pressure rated. Meaning they do fine as a powerhead or at 2 or 4 ft of head... But when you have a canister and a spray bar youll be lucky to get any good water movement through the system.

A Mag 9.5 will likely only be outputting around 300-400 GPH through both the spray bar and canister.

If that is ok, then by all means go right ahead.

Im worried about what you mean by "plumbing the return to the bottom and top of the tank"

How are you working this system? are you using it as an open system with a sump? or a closed system like a canister filter?

It will be a closed system. As far as the return goes. From the output of the Ocean Clear the return line will be split. One line going to the co2 reactor the other back up to the tank. Once the return line goes over the top of the tank it will then be split again with one line going to the bottom as a bottom return then the other part going across the top as a spray bar return for surface movement.

thats no problem, I was worried you were using it as an open system with a sump. That could create quite a few problems setup that way :D

Thanks, So you think the Mag drive 9.5 will be OK in this application? I don't mind the lower flow rate.

Yes, it will work fine. Since your system is closed, youll likely be getting a flow rate around 500-600. My initial impression was that this was operating on a open system, hence my lower flow rate guess.
