Hi everyone,
I recently started a 3 gallon planted tank with one betta & 9watt compact fluorescent light (about 2-3 weeks ago), and I'm noticing thin white "hairs" growing from some of the plants, especially close to the top of the tank near the lights. I change 25% of the water weekly, added iron-rich fertilizer once when I started the tank, and my ammonia level is maximum 0.6 mg/litre. My plants are anacharis & some kind of val (quite fast-growing).

Does anyone know what this stuff is & why it's there? The tank is covered (not dust) and I don't have a cat!

thanks
:)

The white "hairs" are the plant roots. You an snip them off if they bother you. I have some anacharis tha is doing this. What typ of plants do you have?

Hi, no I know about the plant roots, but these are very fine, white, threadlike 'hairs' that are appearing on the top leaves of my aquarium plants--some kind of algae? Anyone?

I feed my betta 3 flakes in the a.m & 2 betta-bite pellets in the pm, I think this is a normal amount... Anyone else have this "algae"??

Betcha they are nematodes of some sort. My tank has 'em and came from high Nitrate levels in the water.

I'm sure they're not worms. They look like cat hair, very fine and white individual strands that I can brush off the plants with a toothbrush. They appear on the leaves of plants, but usually only at the top where the light is. I will check the nitrate levels though, just in case.

Oh dear, I guess I'm gonna have to figure this one out on my own...
