Looks Like Ick-Water Temp + Salt vs Meds

Thanks to my addition of three Weather Loaches (2 now since one died mysteriously with no visible illnesses) and a bunch of Java Moss, it appears that I have imported Ick to the tank as two of my Bosemani Rainbows have white spots that have appeared on their tail and caudil fins. They are swimming well, eating and acting normal with no signs of stress yet. I know this will change as the Ick cycle continues and I will powerhead the tank if/when it looks like they need it.

My question is this: Has anyone tried to increase the temperature of the tank plus add salt as a way to cure Ick versus medicating the tank? In my experience, medication kills as many fish as it cures. My LFS had mentioned that this was a technique many people were trying, but we didn't go into detail as this was a week ago and I didn't have the problem until today.

The tank is cycled and the water readings are as follows:

Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrites: 0 ppm
Nitrates: 5 ppm
pH: 7.5

I already have the salt at 1 tbsp per gallon.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Worked great for me! No harm to my snail or plants either. Also has the added bonus of not turning your silicone seals, air tubing & decorations blue.

Salt is where it is supposed to be and the temp on my thermometer (at the bottom of the tank) is 83 degrees F, which means the temp at the top should be a touch higher. No sign of the Ick ATM, but that probably means it is lurking in the substrate and waiting to sprout. The fish seem to be doing very well this way too.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I caught it early enough to save all of my fish...

Edit: I didn't see anything in the article regarding Ich's effect on snails, etc. Can it use snails as a host?

I can't seem to find anything on the web either. My guess is that it could at least live on the shell. If Ich can exist on decorations, plants, etc., I don't see why it wouldn't on the snail shell. I had (and still have) a snail in my tank while I treated for Ich (both with malachite green and then salt) and I never saw any effects on my snail. I'm guessing that the salt treatment will kill the Ich on the snail shell the same as it would on the gravel, plants, decorations, etc. I've not had any re-occurrence of Ich since the salt/heat treatment.

At best snails would be a passive vector, they cannot carry ich, so the only way they would transport it would be if it happened to land on their shell and not fall off. In a tank being treated, snails are really a non-issue or item. in a fishless tank with snails ich cannot survive as snails won't serve as a host.
