I have a 55 gallon tank....I currently have two small tiger barb, one angle fish, and a snail currently. I had aquired another angel fish. My first angel fish attacked him until it was all over for angelfish number 2. I am in search of a fish I can put in here that will defend himself against thers mildy aggresive fish I already have. I would preffer an oscar, but am told the oscar will eventually take over the tank and kill his mates. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks :shark:

The toughest fish in my tank is a dwarf gourami. He holds his own against the pair of Angels in my avatar and a pair of kribs. He also adds a nice splash of color to the upper part of the tank.

Unless you're cycling now (just started the tank and waiting for bacteria to grow to break down fish poo), you should probably increase the number of tiger barbs because they really need to school. They also look swell together.

Can't really help with your question about aggressive fish since I've never kept any other than tiger barbs.

You might also run into trouble with the angels and barbs, the barbs can be pretty nippy and the angels fins might prove to be too irresistible!! How long has the tank been set up? I think a 55g is too small for alot of oscars, besides the fact that you wouldn't have any fish left!!

I have two of the tiger barb already....I'm afraid anymore, and my angel fish will be under attack.

When I orgionally got the 55 gallon, It was going to be just 2 oscars. but the angel fish was getting cramped in my 10 gallon tank. I adopted the tiger barb from my friend.

I'm a little bit afraid of putting in an oscar with the tiger barb, knowing the oscar will grow larger, he might find them yummy.

Usually tiger barbs will actually do better in larger groups b/c they will pick on each other as opposed to the other fish... How big are they? You might be lucky, or they might not be very big yet to think about going after the angel, but size isn't usually much of a deterent for them!! I would not go with any oscars for that setup, unless you could find a good home for the angel. In that case, you might be able to find a couple of oscars that would be small enough for the tank size, but big enough to hold their own against a larger school of barbs. Have you tried just putting in oscar in the species profiles section and checking out tank size requirements?

The oscars would be big enough to eat the barbs in no time, and too large for a 55 within a year. The barbs will likely eventually nip the Angel fish severely, but I agree a school helps. The problem is you have a mismatch and you're trying to build on that. Plan on what you eventually want in the tank. If it's SA cichlids I'd recommend nothing larger than 6" (Adult Size!). A school of tiger barbs could be OK with these but you might want to see if your LFS will take the angelfish, if the fins are in good shape they should.

i've had the angelfish for about 6 months....he was pretty mature when I picked him out of the pet store tank....he's a little largetr than a silver dollar.

The tiger barb, one is slightly larger than a quarter, and the other is a little smaller than that...

with a tank this size, a community tanks would be nice, but it would seem I like aggresive fishies.... :dive2:
