I just ordered a 125 gal and i'm getting cannister filters for it. My simple question is, the filter is going to be a Rena Filstar XP3 or XP2....if i do the XP2 it would deffinatly mean i'm getting two of them and placing them at opposite ends of the tank....the xp3 is rated for tanks up to 175 gal. Would one XP3 be enough for the 125? Or would it be better to just get for the extra 20 bux Two XP3's instead. I dont see how 2 XP2s would benefit b/c combined they are still less than one XP3. What do you all think?

Well first we'll need to know what fish you're planning on putting in the tank. It does make a difference.
But i would just get 2 XP3 and maybe a Emporer 400 or AC 110.
Should look into Eheims, They are a little pricey but they are well worth it.

sorry, i'll be transferring the 4 sharks that are currently in my 30gal. They are currently about 4 inches max length...3 are irridescents and one is a silvertip, i was going to get one more silvertip as he doesnt seem to happy w/ only 3 other irredescents...other than that i have a blue lobster about 3" on the rocks. I looked into eheims but am leaning towards the rena b/c of the price diff. I cant afford the eheim right now...as long as the Rena isnt too loud (going in my bedroom) i wont mind and i'm sure two xp3's will be fine in a 125.

I've been runing an Xp3 on my 72 gallon tank and its very, very quiet. When I first started it up and got all the bubbles out, you could hear a faint trickling sound, but it was more relaxing than annoying :p: . Now its totaly quiet.

You would probably be better off with two filters no matter what. Not only would it reduce the number of "dead zones" in the tank , but you would also have a backup if one of the filters broke down.

Ok, i just ordered 2 XP3's from big als. The only question remaining is where should i place them? Someone told me if i put them at opposite ends of the tank it will cause disruption in the center of the tank or something causing debris to constantly stir in one spot. Should i put them at opposite ends but facing the same direction? i dont exactly want to create a rectangular whirl pool either, new to use of cannisters so specifics of which way to aim the jets would be helpful...going to bed for tonight though so i'll check back tomorrow night, thanks for the info.

I've got 2 cannisters on my 75g. One is on the back left and the flow heads straight across the back. The other one is on the right and the flow goes diagonally to the center. That setup suits me because of the positioning of my plants.
